Working with the land, not against it.
Environmentally mindful heavy equipment land services for Charlottesville, Albemarle, Greene & Nelson counties. We get the job done with the smallest footprint possible.
Overgrown parcels, neglected estates, and building sites cleared selectively — keeping mature trees and natural drainage intact.
→Pond work, foundation digs, and grade changes — matched to the right-sized machine for the job.
→Ditch clearing, drainage correction, and finish grading that works with the natural lay of your land.
→Decades of fine stone work applied to walls that hold slopes, prevent erosion, and fit the Piedmont landscape.
→New builds and repairs — gravel driveways, farm roads, and back-parcel access that follow the land's contour.
→Large acreage, overgrown fields, fence lines, and lots too far gone for a standard mower.
→What We Do
From overgrown estates to washed-out driveways — Peter brings forty years of experience and a light touch to every job, with minimal disturbance to the surrounding landscape.
Peter takes a selective approach to clearing — removing what needs to go while preserving mature trees, natural drainage, and the character of your land. Whether you've got an overgrown estate, a neglected pasture, or a building site that needs opening up, we clear with purpose, not a scorched-earth approach.
Foundation digs, pond work, and grade changes — matched to the right machine for the scale of the job. Forty years of equipment experience means knowing when a compact excavator will do and when the work calls for something bigger. The goal is always less soil compaction and less site disruption.
Water is the biggest force shaping Piedmont land, and Peter knows how it moves. Ditch clearing, drainage correction, finish grading, and site preparation — all done working with the natural lay of the land, not against it. Proper water management means less erosion and fewer problems down the road.
Peter's fine stone work background sets him apart. Retaining walls that manage slopes, prevent erosion, and create usable space on Virginia's rolling terrain — built with natural stone, block, or timber to complement the landscape rather than fight it. Decades of craftsmanship in every wall.
New gravel driveways, farm road repairs, and back-parcel access routes that follow the natural contour of your property. Peter designs for drainage first — because a driveway that works with the terrain lasts through Virginia's seasons without washing out after every hard rain.
Fields, fence lines, overgrown lots, and acreage too far gone for a standard mower. Commercial bushhogging keeps your property under control without overworking the land — maintaining meadows, clearing sight lines, and keeping brush from reclaiming what you've already cleared.
About Us
Peter Farrell has been working the land for over forty years. Born and raised in Afton, Virginia, he grew up on farms in the Blue Ridge foothills — running equipment, moving earth, building stone walls, and learning what the Piedmont terrain demands. That's more than four decades of reading soil, grading slopes, and understanding how water moves through Virginia clay.
Greenwood Land Works is Peter's way of getting back to what he does best: working with his hands to beautify, enhance, and improve the land. Whether it's clearing an overgrown estate, repairing a washed-out driveway, or opening up access to a back parcel, every job starts with the same question — how do we make this land more useful while keeping its character intact?
This isn't corporate landscaping. Peter believes in sustainable practices that retain the character of old Virginia — the rolling pastures, the hardwood stands, the creek bottoms and ridgelines that make this part of the state worth living in. He serves homeowners, farmers, property managers, and landowners across Albemarle, Greene, and Nelson counties from his home base in Afton.
We use the smallest equipment that will get the job done. Less soil compaction, less disruption to drainage patterns, less damage to surrounding vegetation. The goal is to change what needs changing and leave everything else untouched.
Virginia soil, Virginia grades, Virginia weather — we know the land because we live on it. From the red clay of Albemarle to the rocky mountain slopes of Greene and Nelson, we understand what the terrain demands.
We protect existing waterways, preserve mature trees when possible, manage erosion through proper grading and drainage, and follow best practices for sediment control. Your land is an asset — we treat it that way.
Our Equipment
Peter matches the machine to the job — not the other way around. Forty years of equipment experience means knowing when a compact machine will do and when heavier iron is called for. The goal is always the same: get the work done with the smallest footprint possible.
